It's all about the time.
Music has always been the cornerstone of my personality since
about the age of six. I remember Mom and Dad saying “You’re
going to ruin your ‘Disco Duck’ record if you don’t let it cool off.”
(I’m guessing they were sick of hearing what was, in retrospect, a
pretty bad song.)
I played bass guitar in my earlier years back in New York (Burnt
Orange, Man Down Alone), then I got real cozy behind the tubs
after migrating to California. Altogether I’ve been playing drums
for about ten years now. Playing percussion is a Mitchell family
DNA trait. My Dad, John Mitchell, played professionally for many
years back in the 80’s. My grandfather and three cousins play as
well. The only way to get the groove out of our blood is by
transfusion, and if left with a choice between transfusion and
death, I’d choose death for sure.
Through the years I’ve taken an interest in many types of popular
music. My playing style is greatly influenced by just about every
style of rock, ska, blues, heavy metal, swing, classic country and
dance. There’s not too much I don’t like. A list of specific artists
that have influenced me would include The Police, Black Sabbath,
Ray Charles, The Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, The Doors, and Tool.
My role with SixString today would not be possible without the
people in my life who support me and my music habit. At the top
of that list are my lovely wife, Beverly, and my newborn son, Kris.
Dear, old Dad is also due this honor as my drumming partner in
crime. Robert Evanila and my mentor, the infamous Dr. Dave
Rogers of local groups Tamsen Donner Band and Swing Thing,
similarly rank high in that support system.
The language of music speaks volumes of tastes, but sees no
color.
